Steve Barancik - a DIY webmaster having fun...and making money

A few years back, if someone had told me I was going to be a webmaster, I would have told them they were crazy.

I was successful screenwriter Steve Barancik to be specific. I was writing and performing comedy on the side.

Then I got it in my head to start writing children's books.

I did not feel like soliciting publishers. I was burned out enough working with the "suits" in Hollywood. So I decided to build a website to feature my self published books.

Build a website and suddenly the world comes rushing to your door, right? What an idiot I was.

The story of my failed website

I...

  • bought Front Page
  • read the manual
  • slapped up a ten page website...

...and waited for Google to bring the traffic, all the people who would buy my books.

I think you know what happened. Two things, actually.

  1. The search engines had no reason to send anyone to my site.
  2. Anyone who did happen to arrive there had little reason to buy.

Yep! After years in the business of writing for others and thinking that marketing just happens, I realized it was going to be harder than I thought.

The job of attracting eyeballs and moving product is like anything else. There are a number of right ways to do it. And an infinite number of wrong ways.

I may have been an idiot, but I try not to stay an idiot for long

I looked at those Google search rankings. When you're using Google to find things, you don't think much about the 7 million webpages below the one you clicked on.

But when you're trying to be found, it's time to figure out how pages get out of the scrap heap and up to the top of the heap.

Naturally, I came across the SEO charlatans

Those guys were so transparent to me! They sounded like every infomercial I'd ever heard.

If it was that easy, dimbulb, everybody would be doing it!

Seriously! According to the SEO tricksters, every site can be #1!

Then I came across some folks saying something different:

It's all about the content, stupid.

Finally, something that made sense! It is all about the content. The search engines get better and better at finding the good stuff (and tricking them gets harder and harder).

So create good content; get good traffic. Create lots of great content...

Get great traffic. It ain't easy, but it's that simple.

Creating great content...that's what writers do. So it turns out that the web is the place for me. Webmaster Steve Barancik, at your service.
